In honor of the upcoming holidays, in this blog, we reflect on the time we had the immense pleasure to sit down with top-tier prospectors Paula Burlison, Rocky Wright, and Drew Armstrong and discuss how they reached success as real estate prospectors. During our conversation, the trio gave our team some heartwarming insight on why they’re grateful for their prospecting careers (Hint: it’s gratitude).
The surprising ingredient to your happiness
Thanksgiving is nearly here, and while sellers never really take a break from needing an agent’s help, we encourage the REDX community and other agents to take a moment to pause and reflect on what you’re grateful for, and why your prospecting career is a benefit to your life and the lives of your loved ones.
When you adopt an attitude of gratitude, your work as an agent feels more rewarding. You can motivate yourself to work harder and more enthusiastically when you consider the benefits your career makes possible for you.
At REDX HQ, we hosted an interactive discussion between our team and top-producing prospecting agents Paula Burlison, Rocky Wright, and Drew Armstrong. We took a lot away from the conversation, but above all, we were impacted deeply by the trio’s gratefulness for their career path.
1. Paula Burlison on helping her family reach success
“We grew up in the South. I’m the oldest of four kids. My younger sister means a lot to me, we’re best friends, we’ve been best friends my entire life. When she was fourteen, I started having her come out and spend time with me. I would take her places and do things with her to help her become more cultured. Then, when she turned 18, I rented a house and helped her go through college. Now she has her bachelor’s degree and she’s a dental hygienist in London. It was because of my business that I was able to get her through college because we would’ve never been able to do so otherwise.”
2. Rocky Wright on thanking the troops
“Whenever I see a soldier having lunch or something, I always make sure to pay for their tab, and I don’t let them know. I don’t know what it is about our soldiers, but they just really touch my heart.”
3. Drew Armstrong on the comfort of financial security
“Probably the biggest thing is knowing how to prospect and having the right leads, and the right training… Look at the disaster that went through our economy and industry since 2007-2008. Even if my production goes way down, I know exactly where all those listings went that I didn’t get. It’s not that there’s not business available, it’s just moving. I’ve been through hell in my industry, and we were just fine. It doesn’t really matter which way it goes, you don’t need to worry about it. I’m absolutely confident in that. I don’t worry about whether things go up and down as far as my job goes, I worry about my clients. But I’m not worried about my family.”
So get inspired…
Now that you’ve heard the various reasons why these successful agents are grateful for their prospecting career, take a look at these final 3 videos that will motivate you to practice an attitude of gratitude. If not to make you a better agent, then a better, happier person.
1. Robert Emmons on the 4 reasons gratitude matters in What Good Is Gratitude?
“When we appreciate the value [of something], we’re less likely to depreciate the value – which is to lose value – therefore we extract more benefits. It allows you to participate more in life – you just notice the positives more. That magnifies your experience, your pleasure that you get. So, it magnifies the goodness.”
2. A humorous take on the power of sharing gratitude with others in An Experiment in Gratitude
“For those who actually picked up the phone and personally expressed their gratitude, we saw increases [in overall happiness] between 4% and 19%.”
3. David Steindl-Rast on treating moments as precious gifts in Want to be Happy? Be Grateful
“It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy… by becoming aware that every moment is a ‘given moment,’ as we say. It’s a gift. You haven’t earned it or brought it about. And you have no way of assuring there will be another moment given to you. If you didn’t have this present moment, you wouldn’t have an opportunity to do or experience anything.”
Giving thanks isn’t reserved for just Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a great time to take a moment and reflect on why you’re grateful for your real estate career and what prosperity it brings for you, your family, your friends, or whoever’s lives it touches. However, agents should learn to ponder these positive thoughts daily to improve not only your overall prospecting experience but your mental well-being altogether. Being grateful for your achievements will give you an appreciative perspective and motivate you to do better every day.
